I have a DS918+. It's pretty good, but I'm not sure it's what I'd do if I was looking to buy now.
Synology recently annoyed a lot of their home users by starting to insist that new NAS units, starting from ...25 models, should only use certified drives, which would have meant only Synology branded drives. And to a lot of home users, myself included, one of the big benefits of a NAS is that you can stick almost any drives in them, and they'll use the space. They've backed down now, but there's concern they could try again.
Also, drives have become available in bigger sizes faster than my storage needs have grown. When I got the NAS, 6Tb drives were the sweet spot for price per Tb, but now 20Tb drives are fairly reasonable. And I don't have that much data.
I'll probably start moving towards having a Mac mini with a couple of external drives, set up to copy from one drive to the other overnight. It's still not a perfect setup, but it would be easy to manage, and a lot more powerful.
I still think Synology NAS units are good, just that it's probably not what I'd go for now.
