I have a DS918+. It's pretty good, but I'm not sure it's what I'd do if I was looking to buy now.
Synology are currently annoying a lot of their home users by starting to insist that new NAS units, starting from ...25 models, should only use certified drives, which currently seems to mean only Synology branded drives. And to a lot of home users, myself included, one of the big benefits of a NAS is that you can stick almost any drives in them, and they'll use the space. Now, you have to use Synology drives, which aren't anywhere near the cheapest, even among drives specially made for NAS use.
Also, drives have become available in bigger sizes faster than my storage needs have grown. When I got the NAS, 6Tb drives were the sweet spot for price per Tb, but now 20Tb drives are fairly reasonable. And I don't have that much data.
I'll probably start moving towards having a Mac mini with a couple of external drives, set up to copy from one drive to the other overnight. It's still not a perfect setup, but it would be easier to manage, and a lot more powerful.
I still think Synology NAS units are good, just that they might not be very cost-effective for home use any more.
