When the Switch 2 launched, I was tempted, but I managed to resist. We'd had the original Switch, but mainly used by Sam. We also had the OLED version, which Sam used for a while. I'd had a try of it, but didn't really take to it. When the temptation started to build, I had another go with the OLED Switch, knowing that I'd tried before, and I wouldn't love it. And if I didn't really love the older one, the new Switch 2 wasn't *that* different that I'd suddenly love that one. But it backfired. I'd got back into [[Stardew Valley]], and it's great on the Switch. And with a few of the other games we had, I really enjoyed using it. And I had some money available from Christmas, so I ended up buying the Switch 2. I'm still loving it so far, probably very much helped by [[Pokopia]]. The bigger screen is really nice, and LCD panels have improved enough that it's not noticeably bad to me after the OLED. The new JoyCons feel pretty good to me, too. I almost entirely play handheld, but dropping it in the dock to play on the TV is nice and easy. ## What It Does Well There's a core thing about the Switch, which gives it its name, that nothing else does quite as well. It's pretty good at being both a home console, connected to a TV, with a separate controller, *and* being a handheld console you can play anywhere. And while it's nowhere near being the most powerful console, it's very good at that *console* thing of just working. There's no tweaking of settings, trying to get the best performance and framerate. Just open a game and play. ## Accessories ### Screen Protector I just grabbed whatever was available easily, and it was fine. But it's pretty much vital - the screen has a plastic layer on the top, which scratches easily. I don't use a screen protector on most other devices, but the Switch is too easily scratched to risk it. ### Cases I picked one up fairly cheap when I bought my Switch 2. I used it for a while, but then just started chucking the switch in my bag without it. But my bag is a nicely padded camera bag. The case I got has a detachable part for the Switch itself, and a bigger bit for accessories, which I still use to keep things together. ### Pro Controller I bought it, then barely used it for months, then started using it a lot. It's really good, the buttons feel very responsive. If you use your Switch with a TV, it's maybe worth it - but it is expensive. ## The Nintendo eShop Some people love buying actual game cartridges in a box. I'm one of the weirdos who actually likes digital games. I tend to switch games around quite a bit, so swapping cartridges around would soon get annoying. And while Nintendo's eShop has a reputation for being expensive, I don't think it's nearly as bad as people tend to think. Nintendo's own stuff doesn't go on sale often, but third party games do. When you view your 'faved' games in the eShop, there's a tickbox to filter for games on sale now. So if you fave anything you might want at some point, you can quickly check what's on sale.
